Before you start
- Read your lease for any cleaning requirements, like carpet cleaning.
- Get everything out first. An empty home cleans faster and better.
- Test a hidden spot before scrubbing marks off painted walls.
- Take dated photos of every room when you finish.
Kitchen
- Clean inside the oven, racks and drawer
- Empty, wipe and dry the fridge and freezer, including shelves and drawers
- Clean inside the microwave and the dishwasher door and filter
- Wipe inside and outside every cabinet and drawer
- Degrease the stovetop, range hood and backsplash
- Scrub the sink and faucet
- Sweep and mop the floor, including under where the fridge sits if it moves safely
Bathrooms
- Scrub the shower, tub, grout and glass
- Clean the toilet inside and out, including the base
- Wipe inside the vanity cabinets and drawers
- Clean mirrors, fixtures and the exhaust fan cover
- Mop the floor
Bedrooms, closets and living areas
- Wipe closet shelves and rods, and vacuum closet floors
- Wipe baseboards, doors, door frames and light switches
- Spot-clean scuffs and fingerprints on walls
- Dust ceiling fans, vents and light fixtures
- Clean window sills and tracks, and dust blinds
- Vacuum carpets and mop hard floors
Outside and extras
- Sweep the patio, balcony or entry
- Sweep the garage if you had one
- Leave keys, remotes and garage openers where your landlord asked
